Art is often considered uniquely useless - unnecessary for meeting the
basic requirements of living. Can we do without it? . . . . . . . . . . No.
We need it because it satisfies vital personal and social needs. If we
didn't have it we would have to create it.
Art of today performs the same functions as the art of the past. It
continues to satisfy:
(1) our personal needs for expression
(2) our social
needs for communication, celebration, and display
(3) our physical needs
for useful objects and structures
